The incidents occurred in Windham County on Monday, March 25 at several locations in the town of Putnam.

According to the Putnam Police, around 3:50 p.m., officers responded to the area of 342 Church St. for the report of an aggressive fox, that attacked a man.

Police said the fox attacked and attempted to bite at the man. At this time, it was reported the fox made no contact directly with the skin of the victim, nor was the victim injured because of the attack.

State Department of Energy & Environmental Protection Police responded to the scene to help search for the animal, police said.

Earlier in the day a similar incident occurred where a fox went after a dog in the area of Church Street. At that time, the Putnam Police and EnConn Police responded to the area, but the animal was not found.

Police advise the residents of Church Street, Clevland Street, and the surrounding area to remain cautious of their surroundings until the fox is either trapped or humanely euthanized and protect their domestic animals.

According to the DEEP website, residents should:

  • Keep cats indoors and dogs on leash under close supervision, particularly at night.
  • Never feed foxes, clean up fruit dropped from trees and bird seed below feeders.
  • Secure garbage in animal-proof containers and store it in a garage or shed.

If anyone sees this animal contact the Putnam Police Department at 860-928-6565, or in an emergency call 911.

Should anyone come in direct contact with a fox or other wild animal, even the slightest scratch, seek immediate medical attention and let a medical professional evaluate the level of exposure.
